Heart attack signs that don't look like heart attacks

Chest pain isn't always the first sign. What women, diabetics and older adults should watch for, and what to do in the first hour.

Heart attack signs that don't look like heart attacks

A heart attack happens when blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked. The sooner treatment starts, the more muscle can be saved.

The classic signs

Pressure or squeezing in the centre of the chest for more than a few minutes; pain spreading to the arm, jaw, neck or back; breathlessness, cold sweat or nausea.

The quiet signs

Women, older adults and people with diabetes often feel only unusual tiredness, indigestion-like discomfort or breathlessness without pain.

What to do

Call emergency services immediately and don't drive yourself. Reaching a hospital with a cath lab quickly makes the biggest difference.
